Welcome back one and all to the mid-season update in my final season at Vitoria Guimaraes. Plenty going on with four competitions all being played in, I get some surprising job offers and the B team’s Liga 2 title defence starts rather sour, meaning someone is booted out the door!
Last time out of course the main part was the announcement that it will soon all be over but it was also a whirlwind of a transfer window. However, the positive was securing one last Supertaça trophy by beating Porto.
The Save Aims & Rules
With how I want this save to work, I need to be mindful of the squad season on season. As there is a lot of emphasis on the youth setup as these players will shape the first team in seasons to come. Here are the aims and rules to give some context of what I’m trying to pull off here.
- Squad average age must be a maximum of 23 every season.
- Disrupt the Top 3 and become a top team in Portugal (Porto, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon). PASSED
- Win the club’s first league title. PASSED
- Win the club’s first European title.
- Win a domestic treble (League, Cup, Supercup or League Cup) or a European treble (League, Cup, European Cup) PASSED
If the average age is over 23, then I MUST RESIGN FROM MY POSITION!
Youth Intake Preview 2027/28
A projection of another excellent intake but trend has it that when I get this rating, the actual intake usually drops the other way! Still, goalkeepers and wingers are always of interest so we’ll see in the next instalment if any players live up to the expectation.
Primeira Liga 2027/28
August – October 2027
A decent start by all means but there was a few points dropped here and there. The 2-1 loss to Benfica brought an end to our 52 game unbeaten run in league football, with the only other disappointment was the drab 0-0 with Boavista.
Sporting and Porto were both seen off with 3-0 wins to show that we’re not going anywhere in terms of the title chase however, it is quite clear that by the results this once again it could go down to the wire this season.
At this stage, my side lie in second 3 points behind Porto with a game in hand but one thing that is noticeable is, no team is unbeaten at this early stage which gives the indication to expect the unexpected when it comes to results!
November – December 2027
Near enough perfect coming right into the winter period with plenty of goals and clean sheets kept in all but one match of this period! It’s the little things that push you towards titles such as the late win over Varzim (3-2) and then the empathic results over Portimonense (4-0) & Lusitania Lourosa (7-0). Being able to adapt to every game in this way may do us a favour come the end of the season.
Another positive for myself is the amount of scorers we are seeing this season, it’s good that the team have become more accustomed to sharing the load in this area.
Its looks like ourselves and Porto will battle for the title once again, they have the upper hand however, leading my team by two points at our halfway point. The second half of the season looks to be action packed but who will hold their nerve over the busy January & February periods?
Club News 2027
Before we get back into the games, as mentioned nearer the start of the episode there was some things going on in the background that you could say, were unexpected!
Vitoria Guimaraes B Team
More shockwaves around Vitoria Guimaraes as the club president puts title winning B team manager Sasa Ilic to the sword by sacking him! A poor start to the title defending season in Liga 2 sees the side just outside the relegation zone as the team struggle to hold on and see out results. A shame for Ilic but the modern game doesn’t give you much time for form recovery.
Now I haven’t had many of these during the project as I would shoot them down within any press communication but Italian powerhouses Inter & Roma were after my services. I am a big follower of Inter due to some family ties and I was close to attending the interview which would have turned everything upside down. However, I made a commitment to Vitoria SC and I will see this season out!
Domestic Cups 2027/28
Back to the football and let’s see how my side are progressing within the Portuguese domestic cups!
Liga de Taça
Myself and the team have won this trophy a crazy four times in a row, I’d love to make five though!
Two straight forward victories over Sporting (3-0) & Moreirense (4-1) sees us race into the semi finals.
A tie with Famalicao up next before a potential final with Braga or Porto, it’s all to play for that’s for sure.
Taça de Portugal
Into the sixth round/quarter finals we march after overcoming Caldas (3-0) & Pacos Ferreira (5-1) either side of a penalty shootout win over Benfica (1-1 AET) where a crazy five penalties combined were missed or saved! Vizela awaits us in the next round.
Champions League Group Stage 2027/28
Will this finally be the year that I get out of the group stage? I’ve only done it once in the duration of this project!
A massive performance from the boys to navigate through the group stage unbeaten and qualify in first place by a comfortable margin. That unexpected 4-0 victory over Atletico was unbelievable as my team took the game to them on the counter and it definitely paid off!
I did say in the season 7 intro episode to watch out for OGC Nice and it was a good prediction as they beat Atletico to second place, knocking the group favourites to the Europa league. Thinking of the first knockout round, was it a favourable draw?
Well its Juventus up next and I’m not sure how I feel about that. A lot of the players that we all know them for have either retired or left but it’s still going to be a difficult tie.
Well, the next instalment will see the end of the season but also the moment where I depart the club after it’s all said and done. It will be an emotional one I’m sure but nevertheless, we still strive towards some trophies!
As always, thank you for reading the blog, I really appreciate all the support the community give DP-FM as a whole. I’ll be back soon, take care out there.
